| befriending relationships What do we ask from our befrienders? We look for befrienders to commit themselves to a befriending relationship for a minimum of one year but the truth is that in many cases, the link lasts for much longer. We have a number of befrienders at the present time who have been in a befriending relationship for well over 5 years, a huge commitment and one for which the child and the charity is enormously grateful. We draw our volunteer befrienders from all walks of life and across the age spectrum. Currently, the professions of some of those involved include students, teachers, hairdressers, solicitors, policemen and women, and housewives.
The commitment essentially means that befriender and child spend a few hours a month taking part in outings and activities aimed at bringing the youngsters out of their shell and building their confidence in different social scenarios. The range of activities that they take part in is vast from swimming and cinema trips, to visits to the library or a restaurant. However the purpose of the outings is not just to give the kids a day out - the child gains so many more benefits from the time spent with their befriender and instilling values of how to behave in public is an essential element in giving the children the chance to grow into well rounded adults.
