Volunteer Befriender Jane began her journey with Befriend a Child 20 years ago after learning about the charity through her voluntary work with the Children’s Panel. At the time, her daughter was a teenager and was becoming more and more independent, so Jane decided to use her free time to become a role model in the lives of local children. “Since 2005, I have befriended five children, and it’s one of the best things I have done,” she shared.
Jane’s decision to become a befriender was influenced by what she read and experienced through the Children’s Panel. “I quickly began to realise that there were many children in Aberdeen living in difficult circumstances. Unfortunately, many didn’t get the childhood I had or the childhood I gave my daughter. I wanted to do something to make a difference, and I truly believe that Befriend a Child and the work the charity does makes a massive difference.”
Over the years, Jane has taken her befriendees on countless adventures, from local farms and castles to further afield trips. “The farms have always been a huge hit, Wynford Farm and the Farm Stop are particular favourites. We also loved visiting the castles around Aberdeenshire and going out for meals. For the children, it was a real treat to be able to order anything they wanted, and it also helped build their communication skills and confidence.” Jane said.
One of Jane’s most special memories is from an early befriending match. “We got the opportunity to visit Manchester for the day to see a Man United game, we received special permission to go, as outings typically stay within the Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire area. He was football-mad, and the staff at Man United made it such a special experience, he even got a t-shirt. It’s something I will remember forever, and I’m sure it’s the same for my befriendee, even though he’s an adult now.”
Jane has always ensured her young people feel valued, appreciated and remembered even into adulthood. “I’ve kept so many homemade gifts from the children—cards, decorations—and they mean so much to me. I also created photo albums for every child I befriended. They got one, and I kept one. They’re packed with photos and memories, and they’re such treasured keepsakes.”
Consistency and reassurance have been key elements of Jane’s approach to befriending. “I used to send postcards to my befriendees if I was away for work or holiday, just to let them know what I was up to and that I was coming back. Many children supported by Befriend a Child need that stability.”
Jane worked as a Volunteer Coordinator with the charity for two years, gaining a new perspective on the positive impact of befriending. But Jane’s passion for volunteering extends beyond Befriend a Child. She also volunteers with the RNLI, Kincardine O’Neil and Deeside Befriending, supporting the elderly and emergency fostering. “I’ve been volunteering since I was a teenager, and I think everyone should try and do their bit for the community.”
For Jane, the connections she’s built with her befriendees have lasted long after the formal match ended. “I actually attended the baby shower of one of my befriendees last year. I was so honoured to be there. We meet for coffee when we can and keep in touch through WhatsApp. I often send her photos, reminding her of our outings.”
Reflecting on her 20-year journey as a befriender, Jane shared, “It’s been incredible to be a pivotal part of children’s lives. I’m really grateful for the memories we’ve made together. Befriending has been one of the best decisions of my life, and I truly believe that the support and consistency we provide can make a lasting difference for children who need it most. I can’t wait to continue my journey with Befriend a Child.”
Jane’s dedication over the past 20 years has helped to make a real difference, creating lasting memories and giving children the stability and support they need to thrive.
Jean, Head of Operations told us: “Jane has a huge heart and goes the extra mile for everyone. We are so grateful to Jane for the commitment she has given to local children over the past two decades. She would be there in a heartbeat if anyone needed support of any kind. We are incredibly lucky to have Jane in our Befriend a Child family, she encompasses everything we believe in.”
